Key value-added solutions
Vessel comms
Automatic beam switching, network control and WAN management culminate to provide seamless management of the communication bearer. Combined with WAP control, this allows for uninterrupted communications and robust security.
CrewVision
NSSLGlobal’s onboard ship entertainment service, granting access to a wide variety of movies, TV shows, documentaries and daily news sites, all of which are regularly updated. All entertainment licences are included, allowing vessel operators to provide entertainment to their crew, without risking the breach of licencing laws.
UNITE
Keeping crews connected with friends and family back home, using a Wi-Fi hotspot voucher system that allows those onboard to purchase internet and voice vouchers for their own devices. And to make sure they have enough time to properly catch-up, crew members can check their voucher status at any time while in use.
Using compression and resilience over a high latency network, our email service allows seafarers to communicate quickly and with confidence. With options to choose their own POP3/SMTP client, utilise a bespoke email domain for vessel addresses or use the SMART@SEA email domain, vessels can use this service whichever way best suits their needs.
SmartTalk
Allowing for better onboard mobility, the integrated and cost-effective SmartTalk PBX provides the opportunity to move from analogue to IP phones, with IP connectivity provided through existing network cables or Wi-Fi. Crew members can then use analogue handsets, or their own devices, removing the need for additional onboard crew kiosks.
SD-WAN
A virtual WAN architecture allowing vessels to leverage any combination of data transportation services, including Wi-Fi, VSAT, 4G and L-Band. This ensures consistent connectivity and application performance, with automatic traffic steering keeping vessels on the best connection available, to ensure operations can continue.
Firewall and web filter
Additional security controls can help prevent crew members from accessing potentially harmful websites that pose a security risk. Updates to firewall and web filtering rules can be scheduled for certain times of the day to keep these controls up to date, without impacting network speeds during busy periods.
VPN
An embedded VPN service helps to further enhance cybersecurity, creating a secure and encrypted connection between the vessel and its HQ, or any other specified destination – reducing the risk of a security breach.
Enhanced firewall
An optional Layer 7 firewall provides a more advanced and granular level of security, operating at the application layer of the OSI model. By analysing and controlling traffic based on application-level information, the Layer 7 firewall can detect and prevent more sophisticated threats.
Cybersecurity logs
Recording cyber activity logs allows customers to review events and monitor threats, either through the vessel portal or sent automatically to HQ for review.
Anti-virus
Enhanced protection delivered through swift and robust anti-virus scanning. The security software scans all incoming traffic to the vessel, as well as connected endpoints, quickly removing any malicious files and malware at a pre-determined schedule. This system shields clients from receiving harmful file types via email.
Hosting
NSSLGlobal can provide security hosting and management services for any vessel’s applications, providing vessel owners and operators with the peace of mind that their cybersecurity is expertly managed and the appropriate controls have been put in place.
ITSM
IT service management (ITSM) offers clients a fully managed onboard or virtual IT service, with NSSLGlobal taking on responsibility for designing, building, delivering and operating the entire IT infrastructure.
Market applicability and customer benefits
Whether operating a large cargo vessel, a fishing ship, a fleet of naval air carriers or a luxury yacht, SMART@SEA can be fully customised to meet the individual needs of any maritime organisation – offering unrivalled levels of transparency, operational control, and cyber protection.
Backed by NSSLGlobal’s fully global satellite coverage, SMART@SEA is a powerful, cost-effective, single server solution that brings together the full breadth of a vessel’s communications management, cybersecurity, IT and welfare services.
A supporting catalogue of additional value-added and managed services, all of which can be remotely deployed, allows vessel owners and operators to deploy their own customer specific applications with no additional hardware – all delivered through the single virtual appliance.
To help customers remain secure in an ever more digitalised world, the SMART@SEA solution applies automatic security patching and software upgrades which take effect ‘over the air’ via our unique SatLink multicast solution, outside of customers’ data packages and with no disruption to their service. These security features are installed and administered by security cleared staff and engineers and assist with compliance for the IMO 2021 guidelines.
Additionally, its range of welfare solutions, from entertainment packages to internet and voice vouchers, can help organisations to improve onboard conditions and wellbeing. While a suite of managed services packages can assist customers with computer hosting, IT service management and Security Operations Centre services.
SMART@SEA also enables the core services in FUSIONIPLEO, fusing our VSAT with the Starlink LEO network for critical comms and crew welfare services.
